The Magic Mushroom Conundrum
Did you know that AI hallucinates? It is particularly evident when you are not using a trusted set of examples or databases. This means that sometimes, when asking one of the popular AI engines to write a contract, some of the statements generated are hallucinatory. This means that they sound good and read well but are utter rubbish. How do you, the layman, know which is which? Try explaining that to a judge when you stand up in court to defend yourself.
That’s why we try to work with trusted knowledge bases, because otherwise we have to weed out the hallucinogens. It’s Ragtime But It Ain't Music
Ragtime, as I’m sure many of the older generation are aware, was a piano-based musical style in the US between about 1890 and 1910. That’s well over one hundred years ago.
One hundred and twenty years or so later, ask a Data scientist just fresh out of college when it’s time to use RAG, and they will tell you it means Retrieval-Augmented Generation, which is an AI framework that enhances a Large Language Model’s (LLM) accuracy, pulling data from external and trusted knowledge bases, like company documents or databases.
You see, in simple speak, rather than searching the internet for answers, we put together a knowledge base. A facilities department in a large law firm with 50 offices around the world might put all its leasing documents for the building it owns and the office equipment it leases in one place.
Now we can build and refine an AI model to extract relevant information in minutes that would take a long time and much effort to keep up to date. Renewal dates, amounts to be paid, and any number of relevant variables.
So, while 2026 RAG is not the same as the 1890 RAG-TIME, if you let us build an AI engine for you, it’ll still be music to your ears.
Sorry, My Crystal Ball’s In The Wash
Speaking personally, when you dump piles of historical sales data on my desk and ask the question, “What do we need to do to expand our business?”, my answer up until now has been “Sorry, my crystal ball is in the wash”.
With the growth of data science, you can do a whole lot better than gut feelings and clairvoyancy. We can now build you an engine that will interrogate the data and tell you your strengths and weaknesses.
You can decide whether to strengthen the weaknesses or capitalise on your strengths. So, even though it’s AI, people still need to make the final decision. Or do they?
